Wilbur - Recruitment 06

Do have a look at the pictures of recruitment 06. From there, see how we can improve for recruitment 07. A person should not be contented with the current results, even if it is good. One should instead continue to improve and do his best everytime. As the Scout Promise says "On my Honour I promise that I will do my best".

I will leave you with the pictures of recruitment 06. Do look out for more BBGG Gangshow photos. I am sure you all enjoyed yourselves!

rover guoyao - cut and paste too - your rover's trip.

i'm back! was all over the place; rushing here and there. a busy 7 days trip but it's fun as long as my camera is around. the part at china (shenzhen, guangzhou, foshan, zhuhai) was "historial" - many history lessons that were really hard to remember. macau trip was beautifully nice but it was only half a day. hk (niuzhou & mainland hk) trip was amazing with busy night life and many beautiful looking people around. disney land is not that great afterall. i prefer our escape, yes seriously no joke.

these 7 days, i was exposed to many things over there. china's traffic was terrible. it is the directly opposite of ours. over there -> the cars never give way to people. of course, the people there are very used to it already. i like about china is their public bus. it is v cool looking, spacious and new (like those used for sentosa). macau, i love the way it looks but too much casinos. seriously, 24 in total. hk, at 12.30am, the street is still busy with many people. hongkong people really dress well. even an old auntie knows how to dress up and a nerd too- here in spore "anyhow". their mrt is called mtr, they are using the farecard system that we used to use. hk's night life is very enjoyable.

i'm back on the eve of christmas. on the flight back, i realised it was the 24th. i have developed a two four sydrome.

Gangshow and East Coast and dollars

These 2 weeks have been indeed busy.
Earlier on, we had the Gangshow in ACS Barker Road.
I thought the Hougang Rangers were fantastic. Their "STOMP" style of performance was indeed unique. From their performance, one thing stands out: resourcefulness.

One look at the "instruments" and they were neither expensive nor special in terms of the standard scouting items. But hey, play they did with a tinge of easiness and courage. And the result was extraordinary. Wonderful performance!

Next will be today's East Coast. Everyone is enjoying themselves. But hey Saddiq lost the spectacles and Benjamin was not feeling that well.

Having the combined outside was definitely much fun than having it in the school. But the cost?

Currently I am concerned about the low amount of revenue that we have generated in the year 2006. Not spectacular at all. We only have a couple of hundred of dollars.

3 questions for my scouts who are reading the blogs:
1. What are the items that we can perform during the teachers' day? (Please be resourceful)

2. What are we able to organise for the next Combined Meeting? (Safety must be of a concern)

3. How do we generate more revenues next year?

Factors...

This week is a hectic week. A lot of coordination with the vendors for the year end group day trip and the class program.

The scouts, are also being stretched in the NDP practice. PLs have promised that the donation draw can be sold...

Or will it?

On monday, I shall ask all the scouts to stay back and have a meeting @3pm in order to cater to the sec 1 to sec 4 levels.

This cannot be delayed further.

Have we collected the donation draw tickets and re-distribute it back?

School Events and up and coming Activities

Okay, I hope all of you will always take a view at this blog.
All the CCA will be participating in the school NDP rehearsal:

Date: 19/07 and 21/07
Time: 330-530
Venue: Scout Den@ 315

PLs, please take charge and give me the attendance. Everyone must come.

I hope all the scouts will not be misunderstood. Recently I understand from some brothers that the scouts' activities have been occupying their time. Brothers, you got to understand, this is not the pre-scheduled scouts' activities, this is the school activities. Please understand.

Scouter W, Rover Ky and Zalika, may you give me a list of activities that I need to register them?

Must leave these activities at the comments part, so I am aware.

1. Health Day.
2....

Any more?

Understanding history is how we learn

It has been a while since I have last written any thoughts.
Currently there are a number of immediate issues that I need to attend.Classes and CCA. Still it really has been put off for too long a time.

Requested quite a number of personnels to migrate blog to this site. After much thoughts, still it probably will be best that I do it myself. ->

The process of changing the site is always long and painful but eventually it serves a good purpose~I have re~read almost all the entries. Our ups, and our downs.

Though I was in the scholl, I did not turn up because there is a programme for the form class. Anyway upon checking with the other key personnels, I was slightly disappointed with the reply by WW.

Have we forgotten that it is never one person's effort that we are still able to attract the 12~13 good potential brothers?

Have we forgotten that we are a group? Not a mechanical CCA run by an individual?I do not think even the teachers will think of running it for himself or herself without the suggestions of the others.

Maybe all of us should re~read again the blogs?

DaoYong~Good suggestion for the extra water parade. Keep it up.
Joseph~Thanks for the input in the drilling.
GuoYao~Appreciate your turnup.

Group Camp 06

I wrote a blog before the exams...and kept it in...waiting for moments to continue...

In the blink, the exams are over and Group Camp 06 has arrived. I thank the prompt attitude taken by the SPLs, PLs in collecting the forms. Currently there are a few loose ends that I need to tie before the camp commenced...
final collection of:

1. Forms (indemnity forms from the last 3 scouts.)

2. Distributing of the Edusave deduction forms.

3. Indenting of the transportation.

During the Group Camp 06, I will be having reservist...I hope our newly minted brothers will be united, taking care of each other...there are only so many SPL and PLs. Yes, the cheer must be practised consistenly each time we meet...I hope if I am able (if possible) to come and visit my scouts, they will be able to impress me with their always positively on attitude.

Before you begin a thing, remind yourself that difficulties and delays quite impossible to foresee are ahead. If you could see them clearly, naturally you could do a great deal to get rid of them but you can't. You can only see one thing clearly and that is your goal. Form a mental vision of that and cling to it through thick and thin.

Investiture

Wednesday,it has been 3 days since our investiture ended.

Triangular warfare, hike and investiture all jam packed into Sat and Sun.

It was very encouraging to see that the sec 1 students are able to interacting among themselves and with our brother scouts from Zhenghua and GreenRidge Sec.

PL JH need to be specially mentioned, he came back after settling his stuffs (at 1 o'clock)and joined the rest. :)

All the walking around the schools, trying weird concoctions and using higher level thinking to solve the mysteries...I hope the our Scouts had a great time.

I am very impressed by the attitudes of some sec 1 scouts. Though they had some abrasions during the War Game at the night time, the abrasions did not stop them from having spirit and the fun.

The hike was really a killer for me. Especially when it started at 4am in the morning...But we perservere and managed through it,didn't we?

Again I hope all of us share the common vision, bringing on the scouts to the next higher height.

JW'06

Last week, we had completed the JW'06.
Just now, I had given WM and WW the list for them to pin up onto the notice board.

Our top earners for JW'06 were from sec4.Both top earners earned approximately $555.

I believe emphasis had been made from my part to our sec 1 brothers - money is always an issue, at least for me as the leader/teacher in charge. We have limited resources but many things to pay, as mentioned to our sec 1:

Sec 1 orientation - A couple of hundred have been spent.
JW'06 - $2550
Sec 1 uniform - $65 X 14
June camp - ...
Triangular War - ...
Trips - ...
Other courses - ...

My advice to sec 1 is that things are not free. Someone had paid for it last year, yes last year and they were your seniors...from that aspect, we had to at least respect them and more importantly learn from them.

I also understood from the seniors that quite a number of you were not focused enough during JW'06. I mentioned before and will say these again...
1. Have you thought about things that you would want to do?
2. In a swift of 8~9 mths, you will be senior, have you had any things to
welcome your sec 1 brothers?

Be humble and learn :>

Picking up dry twigs and leaves

Friday was generally my happy day as I always mentioned to scouts.
Be it to the senior or to the junior. In a nutshell, felt better as I could see you guys.

Yesterday as I came back from my lunch, I saw this group of young men picking some stuffs near the turnaround in front of Fajar. In closer inspection, there were our fine young gentle from scouts...picking up the fuel for their cooking test :>
So I went over and assisted them. It was a fun occasion, everyone there, Afiq, Albert, Joel and Shi You each had a plastic bag. :> Tommi from other the band also came back to look, assist and pick the leaves.

The idea was to sell the extra bag to those who did not have any dry leaves. Alas, most had the dry leaves and twigs.

Anyway Afiq was slightly hurt on the later part of the day(he fell into the drain while running), though the pain was excruciating, he managed not to cry. Good. At least must inform where and how you were hurt.

Many of the scouts thought cooking was easy. Did you have a hard time trying? I hope you were not taken aback by the difficuities. If there is any difficulties, always conquer it. Then move on.

:>

Things to be done:
1. Settle JW money.
2. Settle Scout T-shirt money.
3. Settle namelist.
4. Settle overseas trip.

Sec 1 orientation

The sec one orientation has been organised with good intent. Many of the items were addressed as planned.
1. Meeting at the Haven
2. Notice board
3. Scout Den
4. Introduction
5. Cooking
6. Games
7. Issues of 2 materials:
- jobweek consent form
- particular form

With the foresight of the SPL, a small but sturdy shelter has been built. It reminded me of the moments of last year when Wei's brothers were trying to achieve their cooking batch.....so much has passed. So many things had occurred, and just a moment later, it is February 2006. What have we learnt?

As always as mentioned, I sincerely requested all of my brothers to have the same visions as me-creating a brotherhood within us. Allowing us to learn from each other such that years later, we will still be in contact and call each other brothers.

Again I look forward the year.

Scouts Orientation

Meeting:06/02/2006
Time: 1500-1545
Venue: Library

Agenda: Scouts Orientation

As mentioned in the meeting, there are a few items that we had discussed

1. Meeting preparation

Who is involved? What need to be done?

Please be meticulous in preparing the meeting. For example, introduction.
Who is needed? How much time need to be spent? What type of of introduction need to
be given?

Look at the mirror, talk to yourself first.

2. Location

Where do we need to meet them? How do we tour them around?

3. Attire

What type of attire are we having?

4. Ice breaking games

Who is in charge? Have you guys played the games before?

5. Flag break

Where is the flag and have we gotten it?

6. Any materials required?

Pen and pencils, paper and board. Any thing required $, please inform me.

Today is Tuesday. PLC should by now have a idea about who is doing what. Imagine from your mind, what kind of setting will it be, how will it be, what need to be done. Simulate in your mind first before you execute. Send me the arrangement.

In the meeting, I commented about 2 things: Sincerity and responsibility.

Look around at your respective patrol and ask yourself, have you prepared the sec 1 last year? Many times we mentioned that others never give us an opportuinity to prove ourselves, but have we put in the effort.

Many a time, the test in CCA is not instantaneous. The result will not show. It, however shows after sometime. When it is not fantastic, we point the finger at others, have we reflected?

Last year, there was a serious deep in the morale during the NPC. This year at the start of the year, another serious dip during recruitment because of a lack of people.

But what really disappointed me in these 2 seemingly unrelated incidents, there is one common cause-infighting among the scouts.

So before we execute any action, ask again, have the key personnels (PLC, scout) been informed?

I look upon Scouter Wilbur because he had helped others to achieve to the greater heights, are you prepared?

Happy New Year

Today mark the New Year Eve.
I wish all the brothers and sisters scouts a happy new year.

But of course, recently till now, there is hardly any event, I treat that as a recovery process after a continuation of many events.

May we have a wonderful 2006! Cheers.

Encouragement

This week has been a week of expresssion. Everyone, whether vebally or through non verbal methods were trying to express their feelings. Though time consuming, to have a session like that is always welcome. It clears the doubts within us that hinder the development of our brotherhood.

I really believe most scouts wants to contribute something: passion, idea, time and even some money. The only difficult thing is that due to misunderstanding, coordination and sometimes pride clouded our execution. As illustrated:

Misunderstanding: It always started with I do more, you do less. We have forgotten that the whole establishment did not even started with us. There were/are effective seniors who took their time to establish the whole TFSG. Did they clamour for recognition? They did not. Each was a step, a small step that grow the group.

Coordination: Through my humble observations, groups flourished in the initial state and die as almost in a sudden within a short few years, or they become ineffective in execution. What has happened? Same action, but drastically different ending! The problem is when there is no coordination, or in a most expressive way of putting it, no respect of the whole coordination, being action-filled, will certainly kill it. Because without the coordination, there is zero accountability in the process. Everyone can do his or her own thing then there will be zero measurement. People will therefore leave.

Pride: The most deadliest sin of all. Last nail onto the coffin will be, pride. With pride, it clouds our mind. Everything becomes a "only I" can do it issue from the "the group" can do it issue.

There were some encouragements though:
Yongwei was there.
Suba was there.
Kaiqi was there.
Sutsiam was there.

Post recruitment

Just recovered from fever. So took a while to update the blog.

ZW, sorry for jumping the conclusion that you had also gotten fever because of playing basketball. ( For the readers infomation, he was down with fever because of building the structure in the rain)

The recruitment week and River raft were over. So a lot of generated events are effectively removed. :>

Again we had done the unimaginable, building the structure poles and tower within a matter of 2 days. We took them down within a few hours.

Maybe we should reflect how to transfer the skill to the coming bothers?

Again...as mentioned in my presentation:
"Despite the difference we have, skin colour, blood type, beliefs, ... in scouts, we are brothers."

Year 2006

Dear brother and sister scouts,

You may have receive 1~2 emails regarding the integrity of the email. This is a practical (real life )problem. I have to send a few times to ensure that that at least the integrity of the email is there.

For example: qj_frodo@yahoo.com becomes qi_frodo@hotmail.com.

The purpose of the email is to ensure that most if us will know of what is required to be done. Case in point will be the coming of the recruitment and the RR. Who is doing what? If you have done. Please tell me. So I can update.

As time and the year 2006, more items will be listed.

My vision is that the whole PLC can be more professional in the tasks allocated at. This is a unpolished draft. Ultimately every scout will have something to be done. Therefore accountability is ensured.

However if you have no tasks on your hand, it does not mean that there is nothing to be done. You may be involved in some key areas. Case in point - APL Wee Meng.

I have told the PLC including my 2 APL my concern and our backup plan. See far, do thing and united we do make a difference.

I am pretty put off some times by other secular things but whenever I see you guys doing some stuffs, building some stuffs, learning (discussing), listening...it lights up my day. Especially some of the corny things mentioned by PL Yong Hock...it does make a difference to know you guys...from there we learn. From me to you, from you to me...

That is the spirit

Yesterday, our school sent a few representatives to ZHSS:
PL JH
PL YH
APL WW
APL WM
J bros

I understand that there is a mis-coordination in timing. Maybe we can learn a lesson from this experience? Nevertheless, it is always good to see you guys in a group.

Met with SPL QJ and PL ZW and was touched that they were putting up the posters.
