Pioneering Model Com 07
To my Dearest Scouts,
How have you guys been after exams? It has been a while since i last saw all of you. Your rover me is already in Ns and doesnt have the time to come down to meeting anymore unless the meeting is on saturday and i hope for that to happen. I hope all of you feel the same.
I am sure all of you are aware of the pioneering model competition right? Like you and me, we had all forgotten the dates but i hope all of you never forget that i once told you guys to start thinking weeks back but that is not the point. My scouts, last year sec 1 now sec 2, do you guys still remember how we took part in the event last year? I'm sure you guys remember the events because that is the first competition that you guys joined. We came in third for 2 events however we didnt have any trophy because trophies are only awarded to the top 2 ranks. This year, we have a new mix of sec 1 and we brought them into this competition. This competition may seem small but it is good enough for us to see how good we really are. Remember what we did for the models last year? Ask yourselves this: Are we going to stay at the same level as last year or is it time to push ourselves more and make a new benchmark and record for ourselves? Many people may tell you joining competition is not about winning but i tell you i doubt so because joining competition is about winning. Without having this aim, you never work towards this goal. With this goal, you will do anything just to ensure you will win the race. Even when people lost the competition, they cry, it's okay because when people fail, people learn from mistakes and ensure they wont repeat it again. And I rather we fail than we never tried.
This unit is now in your hands and it is always in your hands, not mine (though still mine because that is where i came from and where i train my boys). Whatever the result, it reflects on you and finally your unit. How good your unit is depends on how its people want to do for the unit. How bad the unit is shows how its people are not putting effort to improve it. Now Scouter wilbur and i are serving national service, we cant go down as often but we definitely hope that you guys can keep your spirit and promise there and most importantly, (is not to disappoint us) you must remember that you guys must not disappoint yourselves. Everything you do is for yourself, not for anyone. I always told myself this, I will only disappoint myself if i never do in my best; I will not disappoint myself if i put in my best even i didnt win;we must always do things smartly; dont do it for the sake of doing it; then when we fail, we know that we are doing our best and not crying over things that you are already not putting your best in. Hence from last year's experience, we learn and we apply new skills into it.
WHICH IS MY BEST WORK? MY BEST WORK IS MY NEXT WORK.
I have shown some models from last year. A good model will reflect how much effort the team members put in.

Fajar
TOWER Fajar's CREATIVE (campsite)
Fajar BRIDGE
---------
Zhenghua CREATIVITY (campsite) the front door is a sliding(moveable) door - very innovative. they use a good material for "spars". They show our group name, they got good points for that. the more group stuffs we have, the more points awarded. the plastic thing that you see, it is actually a shelter - clever material to use. the "grass", good material to show it is GRASS.
Close up:
Inside is neat and tidy. you look at it, you understand what is it. arrangement - scored.
Zhenghua TOWER:
What catches our eyes are the sharp edges and angles. See the front opening gate. It catches our eyes and look innovative and nice. This scores point.
Zhenghua's BRIDGE
Will you be interested to walk on this bridge if you see this real life?

Chinese High TOWER
material use is not good enough - satay stick. however, the whole thing may seem a possible structure. Good use of colours.
Chinese High TOWERYour turn to tell me...

not as well done as the other 2 but fresh and practical scores point.

Congrats on Kayaking + Outdoor Precaution
Hey, congrats to everyone who attended the Kayaking course. You all did a good job and I hope that you all had lots of fun there. Now that you all have experience Kayaking, might as well take the Outdoor Precaution test now.
All you have to do is just to do a logbook on 2 land activities and 1 sea activities. With your experience in Kayaking, I believe you all have alot to write about the safety issues and what to look out for.
Do the logbook as if you are going to teach me a newbie who do not know anything about the activity. It should not be just 4 to 6 points but as many as possible. Brainstorm and think of what are the dangers that may occur.
I have some things to standardize for your logbook:
Font type - Arial
Font size - 12
1.5 spacing
Each activity should be at least 3 pages long.
You can take a look at the notes at our resource page. Password is the same. http://www.geocities.com/fox_scout
Good luck! If you are done, just contact either myself or Rover KY to hand in...
By the way, I will be enlisting tomorrow (9th Oct) so I won't be seeing you all that often already. Take care guys and remember, you all have to pass Standard by this year! All the best!

Pioneering Model Competition information
HI ALL!
IT IS ONCE AGAIN THE PIONEERING MODEL COMPETITION. I WOULD LIKE TO SEND IN 3 TEAMS. Please form a team of 3 and submit your names to MR YU by next week...
This is the letter:
To: All Scout Leaders
Thru : Sponsoring Authority
Dear Scouters,
BUKIT TIMAH DISTRICT PIONEERING MODEL COMPETITION 2007
Pioneering was used since ancient time to overcome obstacles, survival and to achieve practical purposes, etc. The art of pioneering incorporated into Scouting, thus forms a valuable component in our character-building programme.
The District will be organizing a Pioneering Model Competition for Cub Scouts and Scouts. As the name suggest, the competition will be base on the miniature representation of the actual pioneering structure.
The objective of the Competition is to increase the interest level of pioneering in our district and to encourage the young minds to think. It also strives to inculcate the culture of planning in our members, as it is important to assess the safety and feasibility of the project before construction.
The competition is open to all scout units in the Bukit Timah District. Each Cub scout or Scout unit is only allowed to send a maximum number of three teams of three members each in the Tower, Bridge or Creative projects categories.
The application form must be returned by 29th September 2007. Please see the attached guideline and judging criteria.
Registration is free and participation will be considered for the 2007 FCS Award. There are also attractive prizes to be won.
The judging of the projects will be on 20th October 2007, 1000 hrs at Greenridge Secondary School Foyer.
So, let your boys’ creativity juice flow now! Do email me at http://us.f307.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=keng_yang_lee@hotmail.com should there be any queries.
Yours in Scouting,
Vincent Lee
Chairman
DPMC’07

The height of the model from the base should not exceed 60cm.
Judging and Presentation
The judging is on the 20th October 2007, and will commence at 1000 hrs (10am). The location will be at Greenridge Secondary School.
A classroom student table will be given per project and the scouts are allowed to decorate the table (without vandalizing it). Scouts can come earlier to the school after 0800hrs on the judging day to prepare for the presentation.
All members of the team are required to be present for the presentation of model to the judges.
Judging Criteria

Unit Identity :
A display of the unit identity such as the logo of the unit, the corporate colours of the unit on the model will give a high point in this category.
Aesthetic Values :
The overall outlook of the model will determine the score for this section. E.g. models have to be neat, pleasant to the eye, attractive and detailed.

Wednesday
Warm up 9am
Test 9.20am
Half Uniform with Leather Boots
FOOTDRILL COMMANDS
(http://sg.geocities.com/peicai_sj/Training/footdrill.html)
Purpose
The purpose of drill is to:
1. Enable a commander to move his unit from one place to another in an orderly manner.
3/ Aid in disciplinary training by instilling habits of precision and response to the leader’s orders.
3. Provide a means, through ceremonies, of enhancing the morale of troops, developing the spirit of cohesion, and presenting traditional, interesting and well-executed military parades.
4. Provide for the development of all scouts in the practice of commanding troops.
Drill Instructor’s Notes
It is necessary that at all times, all instructors set the highest possible example in turnout and in their personal drill. If a squad once gets the idea that their instructor is either scruffy or inefficient, he will never regain their confidence. Instructors must have confidence in themselves and they must know perfectly well what they are trying to teach.
As a candidate:
1. You need to ensure that when your leg is rise, it has to be 90 degree.
2. You need to ensure you do a 90 degree bang and not a horse kick.
3. Lock your fist and elbow.
4. Look front and smart.
5. Listen to commands and timing. Be alert.
